I don't think this script has anything bash-specific in it.
I would probably just
-- replace /bin/bash by /bin/sh
-- replace ${GREP=...} by ${GREP:=...}
-- remove OPTS=... and replace $OPTS by -o "$@" to keep
the "$@" magic.
Here's another test:
grep_o_test "word/" "wordword/" "\<word"
