Follow-up Comment #1:

I tried this

echo 'a b' | egrep '\>'
echo 'ab'  | egrep '\>'

in both cases the line was printed.  I don't know why your copy of grep
doesn't work.  It's possible that the problem is in the libc against which
the grep is linked.
