Details:

$ alias grep=grep
$ printf 's\r\n' | LC_ALL=C grep --color=auto 's.*'
<empty line>

if you drop the \r, it works fine.  if you use color=never, it works fine.

behavior can be seen with grep 2.5.{1,3,4}
