Thanks for all the triage!

Note that the first didn't print anything for me,
since I have LC_ALL=C in my environment:

    $ echo abcDEF | LC_ALL=en_GB.UTF-8 ./grep -o -i C.E
    cDE
    $ echo abcDEF | LC_ALL=C ./grep -o -i C.E
