Make configure.ac whitespace-mode compliant?

I've just been updating some patches I have in the patch tracker (a
man page improvement, transparent decompression and dlopening of
libpcre) to current git, and I noticed when working on configure.ac
that saving it from Emacs adds some whitespace changes. I use
global-whitespace-mode; the C files seem not to be affected. What's
the general feeling on this? Could configure.ac be made whitespace
clean, or should I not be using whitespace-mode on it?
