I haven't heard of this problem before.  Paul, when you say less doesn't act
on the escape sequence, do you mean the sequence is just omitted from the
output, or that it is displayed as ASCII (perhaps "ESC[24m"), or something
else?  If it is omitted, is it possible that less is outputting the sequence
but the terminal is ignoring or mishandling it?
