Recent versions hang after loading stage2

In every version after 0.5.96-1, as recent as CVS 2000/11/25, grub is hanging
after loading stage 2. I get:

GRUB Loading stage2.........

then nothing at all, and the floppy access light stays on solid and the
machine is locked up. Even a Ctrl-Alt-Delete won't work, so I have to
hard-reset.

I've tried both basic dd'd boot floppies and filesystem-installed ones. No
difference. I even installed to the hard drive on one box just to make sure
it wasn't a problem specific to loading from floppy, but it hangs there too.

The problem ocurrs in both my machines with totally different
configurations, so I don't think it's a hardware-specific thing.

Any ideas?
