After a fresh checkout from cvs, compile & install, I did:

grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/floppy '(fd0)'

>From the --debug output:

<snip>
+++ expr /dev/fd0 - 1
expr: non-numeric argument
<snip>
+ cat /tmp/grub-install.log.13140

    GRUB  version 0.5.97  (640K lower / 3072K upper memory)

   completions of a device/filename. ]

grub>
 root (fd0,)

Error 12: Invalid device requested

grub>
 setup  --stage2=/mnt/floppy/boot/grub/stage2 --prefix=/boot/grub (fd0)

Error 12: Invalid device requested

grub>
 quit
+ exit 1
<EOF>

The complete output is about 3 kB. I can post it upon request.

Any clues?
