Mandrake is a solution. You can consider Debian too (and there is a french
user list : address@hidden). And, as you know, there is
quite a lot of documentation in french for the GRUB (Florian Hatat is
translating the info manual, he wrote a quick installation guide, and I have
released a grub-howto, etc...).
A working compiler is obviously a master piece of the system...
