On a suggestion I found in the list archive for someone else with a similar problem, I grabbed the latest code out of CVS and compiled. I was then able to install to hd0 (instead of hd0,0) without destroying EZ-BIOS. Everything now works fine--I even added a listing in my menu.lst for a newly compiled 2.4.2 kernel and that works flawlessly, too.

I tried root (hd0,0) followed by setup (hd0,0), which reported success, then rebooted. After EZ-BIOS loaded, then boot loaded GRUB, I get Error 0x01 over and over again.

What does "setup (hd0,0)" print? I suspect it is specifying a wrong
path somewhere. And what is exactly printed on boot?

No, the paths it outputted appeared correct. /boot/grub/stage1, /boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5, and /boot/grub/stage2. That was what was so perplexing. Before I added the symlink to boot, I got a failed to find stage1 in /boot/grub, then it would report that if found the files in /grub, and output an install command using /grub instead of /boot/grub. I just don't know if it was the combination of both EZ-BIOS and a separate boot partition that was too much for the setup command.

Yes, you still need a symlink for 0.5.96.1 and separate boot partition
(should be fixed in next version). Does the symlink point to "." or
"/boot"? It must point to "." for grub. You can check it with ls -l.

I created the symlink exactly as the documentation specified. I left the symlink intact when I installed with 0.5.97--I didn't realize that it might be unnecessary with the new version. At any rate, the new version seems to have cleared everything up. If there is anything I can do (without hosing my working installation) to sort out the problem with 0.5.96.1, let me know.
