it sound like you had grub displaying a menu.  looks like the menu file
is gone. it is usually /boot/grub/menu.lst you'll have todo some reading
up on using the grub shell to get your system to boot.

something like:

root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/hda1 ro
boot

but very likely to be different for your setup. typing help will also
give you a list of commands.
