What device designation are you using? I have 2 Compaq ProLiant servers at
my work (which each have a SMART Array 3200 PCI card with 5 drives each),
and GRUB works on both. (I had to make a hack to a bit of the Stage 2
loader code to prevent a 0-length memory hole at the 4 GB mark from being
counted as the system memory extent. This is now in GRUB CVS.)

Also, it may not work if you are trying to install to a non-primary
partition - I'm assuming GRUB knows that the BIOS is too stupid to boot it
from a non-primary partition (what GRUB calls partitions 0-3 are primary,
4 and up are non-primary).

DevFS has no effect in grub itself, except in the grub shell. Try GRUB
0.90, or the current GRUB CVS (it's tricky to build, read the directions
carefully). Also, try making a GRUB boot floppy by putting an FS on a
floppy, mount it, then do "grub-install --root-directory=[mountpoint]
'(fd0)'". Then, boot from floppy, and type "geometry (hd0)" ar the grub>
prompt. If you can see the disk, GRUB is working.

Well, I guess you could do that, if you hadn't returned it. I assume you
were using the grub shell? Or how were you installing GRUB to the disk?
