if grub-install is failing you need to copy the grub images by hand to
make the commands below work.

cp /usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/* /boot/grub/

or figure out why grub-install is failing. I think you'll find after the
files are copied grub-install may work fine!


huh - did you see the output from my ls...
the files are in place in /boot/grub
i can do the setup manually
But i still see these funky errors about mismatched stage1 and stage2 if i use the savedefault command

they both have the same date so i don't think they are mismatched.
