This kernel is on a UDMA100 60Gb drive and UDMA133controller

kernel (hd3,0)/vmlinuz-2.4.9-31 ide3=0xfff0,0xffff,9

The pci errors early in the boot process (scrolling by so fast it is
difficult to read) are something like

pci: Error while updating region .....

The last messages look like

pivotroot:pivot_root (/sysroot, sysroot/init..)failed: 2
Freeing unused memory: 224K freed
kernel panic: No init found: Try passing init= option to kernel

The above 2.4.9-31 modular kernel passes/boots fine under lilo

A 2.2.20 kernel modularized except for the aic-7870 SCSI card and on a
SCSI drive with the ide3=0xfff0,0xfff,9 passed boot parameter boot fine
under lilo and grub with the UDMA100 hdg4 partition, 30Gb, mounted as a
holding disk for amanda tape backups

Again above modular 2.4 kernel on the UDMA100 fails to boot under grub
