I have a compaq computer that I recently inherited. I believe it came w/
Linux on it and the previous user also installed WindowsME.
Every time I booted, I would have to go through the process of typing in at
the GRUB prompt:
hide (hd 0,1)
unhide (hd0,0)
rootnoverify (hd 0,0)
chainloader +1
makeactive
boot
Then, windows would boot and everything is fine. UNTIL the other day when
I was using the computer in WindowsME, it locked up as I was printing a
rather large document. When I rebooted, the COMPAQ logo came up and then a
black screen with the words "stage1". There is no cursor.
So, I took matters into my own hands, and decided to use the emergency
rescue disk, and yes, I do know that it wipes out everything. But, before
I did it, I found a way to get to DOS on the C:/ and mananged to save some
things on diskette.
To be honest with you, I have no use for Linux or GRUB or whatever that
stuff is. All I need is my Windows.
But, after I go through the motions of using the Rescue Disk, it tells me
to reboot and then again, I get the stage1 on the screen. When I'm able to
get to DOS and I type in C:/winstart...there's a blank screen and it locks
up.
I tried to put my Windows CD in the drive and it tells me it can't read
that device.
Abort, Retry, Fail.
Where do I go from here? How can I just wipe out everything and start all
over w/ just installing Windows again? This GRUB stuff gets on my nerves!
I'd like to get rid of Linux and GRUB forever! Please help me, I'm
desperate for use of my computer at home.
Thanks.
