I think the change is fine for MBR, because other boot loaders (such
as LILO) follow the manner. But I'm not sure what happens when
installing GRUB into a FAT partition (or a FAT floppy). All we need to
care about are MS operating systems. Do you have an environment to
test it? I think this test would be sufficient:
1. Create a FAT floppy with the modified version of GRUB installed.
2. Check if the floppy is recognized correctly.
3. Check if GRUB isn't affected by modifying the floppy by Windows*
(such as creating/deleteing files and folders).
