Thanks.  That fixed the problem and I now have grub compiled.

Well, Slackware includes 'cmp' in the diffutils package.  This
package is in the applications package set and is NOT a required
package.  That's why I didn't have it installed.  I'm assuming
that testing for whether 'cmp' was available would be a fairly
simple test.  That being the case, I think it would help avoid
a lot of confusion for newbie installers and reduce the number
of inquiries if the test were included.  Getting an error message
stating that binutils needs to be updated tends to point users in
the wrong direction.
