I think that it's Linux who treats the partitions differently.

Yes linux has a bug regarding the cache coherency for disks and
partitions, but that's beside the point.

Note that writing to a partition device (rather than to the whole-disk
device) is a Linux-specific workaround because Linux does not
synchronize the caches of partition and whole-disk devices. So
my patch simply returns things back to normal for the file images.

"Back to normal" is not valid since you can also mount partitions
in file images. Again (for linux anyway) we shouldn't treat disks and
files differently.
