can't boot from disk on RAID controller

So, I think I've dotted all my i's and crossed all my t's, but I'm still
having problems. I have an Abit KT7A-RAID motherboard (ver. A9), which
has a Highpoint RAID controller (uses kernel HPT370 driver). I have two
drives attached to the first channel of this controller, a 60gb (master)
and an 80gb (slave), both Seagate Barracudas. In the Highpoint BIOS, I
have the 60gb set as the "BOOT" drive. In the motherboard BIOS, it's set
to boot from the RAID controller. I use reiserfs for all my filesystems.
/ is on the 80gb entirely, and /usr is an EVMS volume that includes space
from the 60gb and the 80gb.

I am running kernel 2.4.20 (Debianized source) with EVMS patches applied.
I have grub 0.93 (CVS release in Debian unstable). I copied stage1,
stage2, and reiserfs_stage1_5 from /usr/lib/grub/i386-pc to /boot/grub.
Now, I'd like to boot from the 60gb drive, which is the master. I booted
from a grub floppy I made according to the instructions in the manual.

find /boot/grub/stage1 produced (hd1,0), so I ran 'root (hd1,0)'. Then I
entered 'setup (hd0)'. So far, so good. However, when I reboot, the
system gets as far as "updating ESCD information" or whatever, then
nothing. I notice that it seeks the floppy drive, but it doesn't boot any
further. As far as I can tell, everything should be set to boot from the
60gb on the RAID controller, but it isn't.

I would appreciate it if you would cc replies to my email address because
I am not subscribed to the grub list. Thanks.
