I have to admit, that I'm using that as a default...  CFLAGS='-O3
-march=athlon'

Thanks you -- that was the problem.

btw. something funny: after doing my ugly "fixes" I made make check
and saw that the size test failed then I recompiled with default
CFLAGS to fix that...
