Thanks for your reply Gregg.

Firstly I am using whatever version travels with the ubuntu repository
so you may not be able to help me. The actual configuration from my

I thought I'd also point out that I've tried using a different sata
controller that I have and it allows grub to run without error. So the
onboard nforce 3 sata controller on my motherboard seems to be the
problem.
