Follow-up Comment #1, bug #18836 (project grub):
Hmm, I did a lousy job describing symptoms:
Symptoms: Grub 0.97 grub-install gives errors when trying to read back data
from the device.
During boot, a successfully installed grub 0.97 elsewhere on the disk spits
out error 17 when trying to access such a fs, which i understand to mean it
can't access/understand the filesystem.
The grub command line in the emulator or in the boot environment will not tab
complete directories or files on such an fs.
The grub 2 command line emulator will not tab complete directories or files
on such an fs.
