Details:

GRUB 1.98 (Debian Squeeze) won't load initrd on PC Chips M787CL board (with
integrated VIA C3 CPU). The Linux kernel loads but panics because of missing
root filesystem.

Manually compiled initrd-less kernel boots fine. Also when the hard drive is
connected to another board, it boots fine with initrd.

Initrd works with GRUB Legacy (0.97) but I noticed that it shows too small
upper memory size - just 14MB although there's a 256MB DIMM installed so I
suspect that this might be the problem.

lsmmap output:
base_addr = 0x0, length = 0x9fc00, type = 0x1
base_addr = 0x9fc00, length = 0x400, type = 0x2
