Alas, I believe the foibles of automake and libtool are too numerous to be 
described.  Strictly speaking these are matters for those packages rather than 
guile.  There's a HACKING file in the workbook (and the dist) with some notes 
concerning guile.

Summary:  README.autogen/README.newbie

Original Submission:  A relatively old version of automake (1.4) and/or old 
libtool 1.3.3) caused autogen.sh to barf with a cryptic message about "macro 
'AM_PROG_LIBTOOL' not found in the library."  Perhaps a README.autogen (or 
README.newbie) is called for.

Points to watch out for:
automake 1.6.2 is okay.
libtool 1.4.2 is okay.

After building libtool, be sure to perform a "hash -r" (if in bash) or "rehash" 
(in csh) if you have  a /usr/local install coexisting with an older /usr 
install.
