Do the default versions not work? I see that hello requires autoconf
2.62 and automake 1.11.1, but these are both some years old.

Search the log for "error" (and ignore the mentions of "strerror"
etc.!). There is a make error.

Yes, there are considerable changes, to the code and even more to the
build system.
