She did not sleep for a long time that night. I know what this tragedy of 
Silver Bush musthave meant to you .
You were blinded by our years of friendship. Dead and gone yearsseemed to be 
whispering to themselves all about her. Where Silver Bush had been was only a 
yawning cellar full of ashesand charred beams.
Yet she paused fora moment on the door-step, the prey of a sudden fancy.
Pat recalled that Judy had always beensuperstitious about northern lights. Oh, 
if I could only wake up and find it all a dream! Lots of jolly little dogs and 
furrykittens. Her busy hands were still, quitestill, at last.
But that very day whenI was prowling on the heights above the city I found a 
spot . Butshe really didnt mind it so much for herself. Yes, he must end his 
days at Swallowfield. And it was so easy to laugh when Hilary was about. 
Thatnew, far, unseen home would be as full of laughter as Silver Bushhad been.
She had a terrible feeling that she did not belong anywhere
