Never ever try that with any of the core packages in the Hurd.
Use at least -O. In this case, -O2 works as well.
Optimization is required to prevent some hassle with inline functions not
being inlined or so.

This is in general a good idea except for gnumach or oskit (because of Linux
driver code that isn't liked by gcc 3.0).
