That are the semantics you want from the filesystem, but all the
information for seeing the previous sessions are still there, and it
is feasible to mount a previous session. It has been implemented for
Linux.
A little googling later... Yes, it has even entered mainline
Linux. From the manpage of "mount":
Mount options for iso9660
session=x
Select number of session on multisession CD. (Since
2.3.4.)
