Yes - I recommend cdbs. The problem is that there's a bunch of magic in
the documentation handling because our build env doesn't behave in an
expected way.

This was supposed to be fixed by the automake patches, which I think are
now just blocked on profiled lib support in libtool (Alfred confirmed
for me the other day that libtool has --with-pic now).

Once the build env is fixed, or replaced with an automake build env, the
rest will be trivial.  Are you on IRC?  I'm there now, we can chat about
ways to approach it.
