If you want to work with original Mach or related stuff, such an ancient
toolchain is necessary indeed. But gnumach is maintained, and works
perfectly well with quite recent versions like 4.0. (There have been
issues with 4.1, but I think these are resolved now.)

Versions below 3.3 haven't been tested for years, so it's quite probable
it doesn't work.
