Well, if it was only *additional* operations that are required, there
would be no problem -- that's what ioctl()s are used for. The point is
rather that for network devices, the *standard* IO operations make no
sense.
Admittedly, Linux is not quite consistent there: DRM for example does
use a device file, although (AFAIK) there is no standard IO either...
