build dependencies are not hard issue, except distribution bootstrap.

Use the AC_PATH_XTRA macro, and then you can use
$(X_CFLAGS)
and
$(X_PRE_LIBS) $(X_LIBS) -lX11 $(X_EXTRA_LIBS)
