What version of LilyPond are you using and on what operating system?

If you have downloaded the Cygwin installation on a Windows platform,
it seems that the cmss7 and some other of the font files are missing
in the package tetex-tiny that's automatically installed when you
install lilypond. As you might guess from its name, the tetex-tiny
package is a cut down version of the tetex-base package, so one
solution to your problem is to run setup.exe again and select the
package tetex-base in the publishing section.

I have already issued a bug report on tetex-tiny on this issue.
