Dear Lilypond developers:
I have recently downloaded LilyPond 2.6.0 for Windows from your website,
and have found two oddities (may not be bugs??) in its operation, that you
may be interested in, as the behavior is not explained or noted in the
html file containing the user's manual. (This document is only titled
Lilypond the Music Typesetter (for version 2.6.1).
I am running Windows 98 Second Edition (no, that's not the first oddity),
and have the lilypond\usr\bin directory in my path. I then shelled out
to the dos box to run it.
Oddity 1: when typing "lilypond --help", the prompt simply reappears
with no output from the app. Is the help info being sent out somewhere
else?
Oddity 2: Still shelled out to dos, I copied the Welcome.ly sample program
(after editing the version number at the end from 2.5.25 to 2.6.0) to dave.ly
in my working directory c:\work, and then typed "lilypond dave.ly".
The app appeared to run the sample ok, and when done, the log contained:
  # -*-compilation-*-
  Processing `dave.ly'
  Parsing...
  Interpreting music... [2]
  Preprocessing graphical objects...
  Calculating line breaks...
  Calculating page breaks...
  Layout output to `dave.ps'...
  Converting to `dave.pdf'...
and my directory now contained dave.ps, but not dave.pdf.
So I ran ghostview (gsview32.exe version 4.4, with gs 8.00) and loaded
dave.ps, and got an error display, as listed below.
A lot of the info in this dump seems to be about the century schoolbook
font, but I have that font in ghostview, so I don't know what it's
complaining about. (Also I am not including the .ps output file in
this email since it is about 700k, but I have it if you are interested).
After closing the error info window, the image was not displayed, but I
found that even so, I could make a pdf output file using gsview's
Convert command (using the pdfwrite device).
Then I loaded the pdf file into gsview and it displayed fine. It also
displayed fine using acrobat reader.
Also, I found I could use Ghostscript's ps2pdf batch file to make a pdf
file.
So really, the fact that Lilypond was not able to go from ps to pdf is
not a hindrance, but still I'm wondering what's wrong, since the
"out of box experience" did not complete, using the main sample file
as input.
One other thing could perhaps be a clue: prior to this version, I have
used Lilypond 1.6.8 under Cygwin (entirely different directories of
course), but could there be some strange leftovers somewhere in the
registry that might confuse the new Lilypond or Ghostscript? I searched
the registry without finding anything significant, and also changed the
directory name of cygwin to xcygwin, but to no effect.
Not really knowing what's going on, of course, I would suggest that if
these two oddities are commonly seen under windows, you might note them
somewhere along with workarounds.
Other than these two very minor issues, I'm glad to be able to use your
program directly, without cygwin in the way.
Thank you for your wonderful efforts in producing Lilypond, especially
the windows port. I know that windows users are more or less used to
sitting in the back of the bus when it comes to unix apps on their
platforms, so I was pleased to find your windows version on the web.
Very truly yours,
Dave Robertson
