Look at the second snippet, showing that the end of the first line is the
end of the piece.

Are you sure you don't want \bar "||:" ? The "|." bar should normally only 
exist at the end of a piece, in that case you may want to have the next line

in its own \score block.

(unfortunately, there is no "|.|:" barline), so if you really need it,
probably need some deeper trickery.
