I think this is not a bug: see:

"In addition, notes are considered a melisma if they are manually beamed, and
automatic beaming (see Setting automatic beam behavior) is switched off."
In melismaBusyProperties you can set what will be considered a melisma (manual
beams, \melisma, ties, and/or slurs); see:
