Yes, I think that "something" is a good candidate for a
@knownissue. However, I confess that (despite trying to read the
email on 3 or 4 different occasions), I can't haven't really
followed the discussion.
If you think there's a clear "potentially questionable deliberate
design decision", then please write a patch, and I'll send it to
-devel for review.
