Janek has just found this link (I don't know if it can be regarded as a  
reliable source, but they do make an interesting point):

By default, LilyPond puts dynamics below the Staff.  When there are lyrics  
nearby, it forces the Lyrics to be placed below dynamic marks, which may  
also cause inconsistency in the Lyrics vertical placement: in systems where  
there are no dynamics, Lyrics will be placed closer to the Staff than in  
systems where there are as much as one dynamic mark (even if it occurs  
during a measure where there are no lyrics).

Basically, this feature request would imply that: for any Voice that has  
Lyrics associated with it, automatically set the default direction for  
dynamics (In the whole Staff parent context) to `UP'. (Of course, this  
should be reverted when alignAboveContext is set.)
