I'd say it's a bug - but a longstanding bug, so lots of workarounds/hacks have 
been used to workaround it.

All stencils (center-column simply combines the individual stencils) should 
report back proper extents, which center-column currently does not do (it 
completely ignores the left half of the stencil).
