I've probably spent too long looking at this patch :) - I still don't fully  
understand the implications of the parenthesis in the \override  
Staff.StaffSymbol #'ledger-positions = #'(-8 -6 (-4 -2) 0) to not start  
talking through the code.

I hope the example is clear enough and the text with it, but any  
simplification or better explanation is more than welcome. Thanks to those  
that tried and tried to explain it (and with examples too), I have (again I  
hope) condensed all the different examples into a simple @lilypond that  
shows everything without the need for more printed examples.
