Yes, you did everything right. Only one note: you have forgotten to
describe your changes in ChangeLog. Please always do that before
committing changes to the repository. Something like that would suffice:

You will probably find Emacs ChangeLog mode (C-x 4 a) helpful.

If mailutils directory contains a checked-out version, it is easier
to commit from that directory instead. This way you don't have to
specify -d option.
