This is a bug (any time a program crashes it's a bug, regardless of
whether the underlying functionality is supported--and in fact this
functionality was meant to be supported).
Luckily for you, it was fixed in GNU make 3.79.1 which was released in
June 2000, only a couple of months after GNU make 3.79.
The current latest version of GNU make is 3.80. I suggest you upgrade
to that one, as there were other bugs with target-specific variables in
3.79.1 which have been fixed in the latest version.
