So are there plans to address this then? If yes, as said before, I'd
intend to make a similar change locally for immediate use. If not I'd
know that I'll have to manually expand the affected lines. Thanks again,

It's not that no one wanted to think about it, it's that the change is
not backward compatible so it requires careful consideration.

This is completely unsupported: a pattern-specific variable is _NOT_ a
pattern rule; you cannot substitute stems into the variable.
