Details:
With the attached makefile, when I do
make |& cat -v
I get the output
make: *** No rule to make target `^[]2', needed by `file'. Stop.
which names a target containing an escape character; that is wrong, since
such a target is not mentioned in the makefile.
Perhaps the long $(shell ...) result string is causing a buffer overflow.
