Yikes - isn't make complicated enough?
Isn't there a straightforward way to handle this
that better fits with the Unix toolbox philosophy?
E.g. by using a wrapper command to handle the mutual exclusion?
Something like
with-pidfile /tmp/ld.pid $(LD) ...
