Yikes! What version, i.e. snapshot date, of Scheme was this happening
with?
Here's what it says today.
Presumably it was the same yesterday:
Image saved on Tuesday April 1, 2008 at 3:16:09 PM
Release 7.7.90.+ || Microcode 15.1 || Runtime 15.7 || SF 4.41
LIAR/i386 4.118 || Edwin 3.116 || SOS 1.8 || IMAIL 1.21
Also, did you have the file folder open in the same Scheme
instance while you were doing the appending?
Hmmm... I really can't remember for sure. I think I didn't,
but I don't know.
My initial wild guess is either unreported memory exhaustion (which
with Edwin as of about a year ago shouldn't be happening so much) or a
failure appending to an already open file folder (which I spot a bug
in, but not one that should affect this). However, I'm just grasping
at straws. Ideally there would be a reproducible test case that I
could try myself, but that's probably too optimistic...
Indeed.
I hadn't realized that when imail modifies an rmail-style file
it writes all over the old, stored messages, like this:
1, edited,, g4g8,
Summary-line: 25-Mar address@hidden [69] address@hidden: G4G8 Last Minute
Info for Speakers]
X-IMAIL-INTERNAL-TIME: Tue, 25 Mar 2008 09:59:02 -0400
Summary-line: 25-Mar address@hidden [69] address@hidden: G4G8 Last Minute
Info for Speakers]
So indeed there's potential to mess something up. Or maybe
it's a bug in afs.
Here's the boundary area in the file, showing the end of the truncated
part and the start of the appended new messages:

[...everything fine in here...but message cuts off below in mid sentence]

Probably doesn't hurt to broach the idea to Jack, but not in such a way as=
to make it an offer so there
