problem with ACS_* displaying |

hi,
I noticed something weird, ACS_ characters do not display correctly (for
example ACS_CKBOARD displays the degree symbol) when I first start up.
I tested this on a Slackware 8 box and a debian box so it's not a distro
misconfiguration thing ... I realized that if I ran BitchX it made the
terminal display the characters correctly after that ...after doing a
manual binary search of a "script" session and a lot of experimentation
I have discovered that typing in this: ^[(U
will suddenly cause proper display of ACS_ characters. (meaning I login,
type ctrl-v[(U<CR>
which of course returns command not found, and now my ncurses program displays
correctly.
this 'fix' works between logins as well. but after a reboot, of course it's
back.
Anyone have any idea what is going on here? I was distressed when this program
I was working on suddenly looked like total crap when I ran it, then noticed it
looked ok after using BitchX ... it wasn't the TERM setting or any stty thing
and after days of looking at everything I could think of figured out that ^[(U
thing, but I still have no idea -WHY- this works.
thanks and happy holidays if you are into that sort of thing.
brian
