I don't know of any efforts to make Perl bindings (or swig bindings)

I think it would be good to distribute them together.

Note: there are python bindings (not distributed yet... I'm waiting
for the ftp servers to free up, so I can get CL7 with new version
of python...), and a start to ruby bindings (haven't checked status
for a month or so)

They might be useful.
