this is not a rule, only an assumption.
- having a primary partition after the main extended partition is allowed by
*many* partitioning tools (eg: cfdisk, fdisk)
- having a primary partition in the main extended partition is allowed by some
partitioning tools (eg: dos fdisk). It happens in same case like:
|-----hda1-------|-------hda2-------| remove hda1
|-----empty------|-------hda2-------| create a logical partition hda5
|-----hda5-------|-------hda2-------|
since some tools always extend the main extended partition to the end of the
disk:
|-----------hda1(extended)----------|
|-----hda5-------|-------hda2-------|
windows has no pb with this, nor fdisk. But parted does.
I discovered this on friday when trying redhat's roswell on a test box here.
Since diskdrake do allow creating primary inside main extended partition (I
changed this when I discovered this asumption was not respected in existing
partition tables)
