That was it! (I was trying to renumber the logical partitions in order, so
as to keep Partition Magic happy).

And it made the solution very easy. I rm'ed all the logical partitions [*],
and recreated them, but starting with the broken partition so that it
became /dev/hda5. That allowed it to start where it wanted to.

So, it all seems to be fine now. Thank you very much again for your help.

[*] This might be bad, but the rest were easily recoverable, so I wasn't
worried about the possibility of losing them anyway.
